Ofgem Energy Supply ReportA report by energy watchdog Ofgem has accused the energy supply industry of engaging in practices that are failing some households and proposed measures to ban unfair price differences.The energy watchdog has proposed a ban on unfair price differences.Ofgem are seeking to prevent electricity and gas firms form penalizing their consumers for paying by different methods under proposals outlined in findings from a seven-month inquiry.The report found that the market was working well for most but at the same time some consumers were missing out on the full benefits of competition.Since the gas and electricity market was opened up to competition ten years ago, Ofgem found no evidence of an energy supply cartel. It also found that consumers have benefited from a range of deals.Concerns were raised over 4 million customers without gas supply who have no access to the best deals.And it found the price difference between paying by pre-payment meter and direct debit had surged from around £80 in 2005 to £118, while the difference between paying quarterly and by direct debit had doubled to £80.Tougher rules on doorstop selling are being sought by Ofgem. It is for pushing for more information to help consumers get the best deals.The Competition Commission will be called in if the companies fail to shape up.It is now considering the need for new powers to guard against market abuse in the wholesale industry.It said the findings would be open for consultation until December 1.Source ITV news |
